Barnes grew up in London and graduated from Kingston University with a degree in Drama and English. A member of the National Youth Music Theatre (he made his debut at the age of 15 in The Ballad of Salomon Pavey), Barnes picked up paid acting jobs on TV (Liquid News, Making Up Your Mind) before starring onstage as Dakin in The History Boys. It was his stage work that drew the attention of the Narnia people and after a very brief audition process, Barnes was signed on to the lead role in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian as well as the next film in the Narnia line, The Voyage of the Dawn Trader.
